How to Get Your Free API Key
Step-by-step guide to connect AI StockAlert with Finnhub.
What is an API key?
An API key is like a password that allows AI StockAlert to request stock prices from Finnhub.
Why do I need one?
AI StockAlert uses a Bring Your Own API Key model. This means you can usually use Finnhub's free tier, you stay in control of your data usage, and there are no hidden data fees.
Is it safe?
Yes. Your API key is stored locally on your computer, never shared or sold, and used only to request market data from Finnhub.
Step-by-step: Get your free Finnhub API key
Open the Finnhub dashboard
Go to finnhub.io/dashboard
Create an account
If you don't already have one, click Sign Up and complete the registration.
Find your API key
Once logged in, you'll see your API Key on the dashboard.
Copy the key
Click Copy (or highlight it and press Ctrl+C).
Paste the key into AI StockAlert
Open AI StockAlert → Settings → Market Data → Paste your API key → Test Connection → Save
Confirm it works
If the test succeeds, you're ready to create alerts.
Common Issues
Invalid API key
Make sure the full key is copied correctly without extra spaces.
Rate limit reached
Free plans have limits. Reduce refresh speed or number of tracked stocks.
No data showing
Check your internet connection and try again. Some corporate networks block API calls.
About free key limits
Finnhub free keys have request limits. For most personal watchlists and alerts, the free plan is enough. If you later want faster refresh or more symbols, Finnhub offers paid upgrades.
